Bucs take 3 of 4 from Friars

John_Candelaria_PITGame 1 at San Diego,

Pittsburgh struck for a run in the sixth and eighth innings to breeze past the Padres in the opener.  "The Candy Man" John Candelaria was on his "A" game as he shut down the Padres bats through 8 innings of solid work. Eddie Whitson got stuck with the hard luck loss and he surrendered 2 unearned runs over 7.2 innings. Barry Bonds banged out 3 hits including driving in one of the runs. Pirates 2.....Padres 0.

Game 2,Eric_Show_SDP

Eric Show was brilliant today for the home town missionaries as he went the distance with an impressive victory of Pittsburgh. Show even helped his cause by singling in a run and scoring one as well.  Bip Roberts was the hitting star for San Diego with 3 hits and 2 RBI. The hard luck loser was right hander Doug Drabek who also pitched the whole game. Padres 3....Pirates 1.

Rick_Rhoden_PITGame 3 at Pittsburgh,

Bill Madlock and Bobby Bonilla each connected for homeruns  as the series switched to Three Rivers Stadium.  Rich Rhoden was stellar as he shut down the Padres sticks surrendering only two measly singles over 8 innings of overpowering stuff.  Padre lefty, Tim Lollar was pounded for four runs through 6.1 innings. Pirates 4....Padres 0.

Game 4,Bobby_Bonilla_PIT

The Lumber Company won the finale going away. It was never really a contest as the Pirate hitters banged around the Padre pitching staff for fourteen hits and twelve runs.  Andy Hawkins was shelled for 13 hits and 12 runs(9 earned) as he pitched into the 7th.  Bobby Bonilla had a big day with 3 hits and 4 RBI to make a winner of Jim Bibby (1-0). You know things are not going right for your pitching staff when a relief pitcher connects for a homerun. That is what happened as Don Robinson came in for mop up work but crushed a homerun into the left field stands to add insult to injury. Pirates 12....Padres 1
